Square Banana is a product design consultancy
We design products. Completely. Totally. Holistically.
We are all surrounded by products. Things that populate our lives every minute of every day. Tangible objects that we can see, touch, use, interact and engage with. From the toothbrush and shampoo you use every morning, to the phone, computer and myriad gadgets you rely on daily. Take a look around. If you took account of all the products that you come into contact with every day, the sheer quantity and variety would astound you. And these are merely the tip of the iceberg. Take a step back from products you 'buy' to those that save lives in hospitals, that keep industry moving, or that keep our troops safe. Essential to the global economy and to advancing human ingenuity.
Each and every one of these products needs consideration in every aspect of its existence. How it looks, how it functions, how it is made, how much it costs, how it feels and - most importantly - a sound justification for its place in our lives.
That's what we do. We are a strange combination of visionary, artist, engineer, marketeer and accountant.
We like to think of it as bandwidth.
We are always looking to the future and yet we are grounded firmly in reality. Head in the clouds but feet on the floor. To design truly great products, you need to anticipate future needs, understand how people behave, develop a vast knowledge of manufacturing processes, keep abreast of technological advancements, and know how to meet a budget. Like a good recipe, the right ingredients are necessary to deliver a perfect end product. If any of these are missing, the product is left wanting. Lacking something essential.
An artist can create beauty without function. An engineer can create brilliant functionality without consideration for aesthetics or usability. It is our job to represent the user. The consumer. The purchaser. People. It is our responsibility to ensure that the end product is not only aesthetic and ergonomic in use, but functions perfectly as it should and is delivered at a cost appropriate to the market. Relevant and just right.
Most people don't think people like us exist. They think that products simply and magically 'appear' somewhere in a factory a thousand miles away at the press of a button. Not so. Every single aspect of every single product has been considered in some way or another by a human being. More often than not, a product designer.
